here we are how many weeks later? >> i'm asking if it works coming from paul ryan. >> can i ask you a question? how many weeks? >> two and a half weeks. >> two and a half weeks later? i think we're good. what did paul ryan say, willie? he said the response was slow, confused, and it is. in the middle of all this, the president thinks it's a bump in the road. i think two weeks later, not time to ask these questions? the biggest problem before was they did it the morning after all of this erupted. >> it was bad press by them. but what we pointed out early on is it was insults to americans to propose the idea that it was based on the youtube video. that people showed up with heavy weapons, rpgs and things like that as i said before to talk about a mouth breather in the united states that 3,000 people on youtube had seen. that was the insult. that wasn't the problem, that they went out publicly and said right away it was based on the video. >> bottom line, mark halperin, you look at all the polls, americans want to get ba

i was surprised that obama didn't bring it up. biggest surprise for me of the night is that it didn't come up. it's been the dominant thing in our debate for the last few weeks. >> david axelrod is coming up. jon meacham, you look over the past 25 years, 30 years or so, and you look at the republican presidential candidates who all have strengths, they've all been remarkable men in their own way, but not good debaters. you know, republicans have held our breath through the john mccain debates and the george w. bush debates and the bob dole debates and the george h.w. debates. again, a great man, a horrific debater. you know, the famous jon lovitz line, "i can't believe i'm losing to this guy." playing michael dukakis. you really do have to go back to ronald reagan to find a republican that was in command during a presidential debate. and i predict that's going to excite the republican base in a way it hasn't been excited in a very long time. we're not used to winning debates like this. >> right. >> i'd even -- i think you're exact

it is going to be fascinating to see what the polls show this next week. a lot of it may hinge on what happens in three minutes. we've got the jobs report coming out and the obama campaign obviously crossing their fingers. >> we'll bring that to you live. chuck and miles stay with us. the jobs number is moments away. we'll be right back. by the middle of next week, people will say barack obama can't walk down the sidewalk without stumbling. i'm stunned by -- i mean, the republicans are excited, but i'm stunned by how democrats seem to keep getting more depressed every day. i've had people that have never voted republican in their life. >> right. >> saying i may have to do it this year. >> i think there's been that. there's also been a little bit of a back-and-forth about the jobs numbers that have made the republicans look desperate. but yes, overall, i think the debate had a terrible impact for the president and one that i think is surprisingly lasting. >> yeah, why is that? >> well, because a lot of people were watching and because you're wondering why things don't work in washington. and when you see two people go head to head and you see it be so starkly clear stylistically, you kind of wonder if that is brought home. >> that the president's disconnect -- >> yeah. so there's a lot of work to be done in the next debate. i mean, a lot of work. he's going to have to get his hands dirty. >> i take it if we're hearing th
